3D Printing material options

Material choice defines what your print can do. Pick wrong, and your part warps, cracks, or fails under load. Pick right, and you match injection-molded strength at prototype speed.
Plastics dominate desktop printing. PLA prints easy, smells sweet, biodegrades slowly. Good for looks, bad for heat above 60°C. ABS handles 100°C and impact better, but warps without an enclosure. PETG splits the difference—tougher than PLA, easier than ABS, food-safe in theory. Nylon absorbs moisture and fights bed adhesion, yet delivers living-hinge flexibility and wear resistance no other desktop material matches.
Resins unlock detail. Standard resins print smooth miniatures and jewelry masters. Tough or flexible resins mimic ABS or rubber. High-temp resins survive 200°C for mold inserts or under-hood testing. Biocompatible resins exist for dental and surgical guides—certified lots, not hobby grades.
Metals and composites serve industry. Aluminum and titanium powder (SLM/DMLS) produce flight-ready parts. Carbon fiber-filled nylon or chopped fiber filaments boost stiffness for jigs and fixtures. Continuous fiber printing (Markforged, Anisoprint) rivals aluminum strength in specific directions.
Test before you trust. Print a tensile bar, a heat-deflection coupon, and a fit-check part. Data sheets lie by omission. Your printer, your environment, your settings write the real spec.
